Full review (campaign only, will follow up with multiplayer once I've had a chance to play...I loved the ME3 multiplayer, so I'm looking forward to giving it a try):
The Good -
The story is engaging and interesting, with plenty of wonder tinged with a bit of terror. The narrative includes a good mix of the themes of previous Mass Effect series - survival of humanity, collaboration & confrontation with alien races, brooding threats from mysterious forces - with a new focus on exploration and restarting an entirely new galactic civilization.
The combat system is updated with a lot of what made the ME3 multiplayer so much fun and fast paced while still preserving nearly all the flexibility of the original trilogy's system. Gone is having to constantly interrupt the action by pausing to bring up the power wheel (with the exception of applying a booster like a shield buff or incendiary ammo). Powers are mapped to buttons and while you are limited to three powers at a time, you can switch profiles whenever you want to bring up a different power loadout. It really works well. Combos are a little easier to figure out now - "priming" and "detonating" powers are identified clearly in the descriptions and tech powers and biotic powers now prime and detonate each other. The jetpack is a great addition and it works well in conjunction with a climbing function and a jet-assisted dodge. The result is a much improved ability to move around the battlefield and dramatically increased "verticality" of the environment, both in combat and exploration. It's not revolutionary, but it's well implemented and certainly welcome. An added bonus is you don't have to worry about falling damage, which I always find a hugely annoying (universe-saving hero after successfully taking on wave after wave of space monsters and killer robots accidentally steps of a ledge and falls to his death just seems stupid).
The visuals are amazing - without giving too much away, exploring the first "vault" I found myself constantly wanting to slow down and check out all the scenery. Some of the planetary surfaces can be a bit bare and desolate but that's kind of the point.
The crafting system is fine and not particularly difficult to figure out (nor essential - you can skip it if it's not your thing and still get plenty of gear to get you through).
The Bad
Much of this has been said already but for the sake of giving a balanced review, I will echo that the game has some issues. However none rise to the level of ruining it, at least for me. It is somewhat buggy, although not extraordinarily so compared to other releases of similar scope. You have your typical glitches of characters getting stuck somehow in the environment. For me, the most annoying bugs are when something should trigger to allow you to advance and it doesn't. This happened to me once in the first ~4 hours of playing, and it was easily solved by stopping and reloading the environment. But it is very annoying, especially when you are already trying to work out a "puzzle." Related seems to be a bug where your next objective doesn't show up sometimes in the tracking log. The bugs are annoying and inexcusable, but I suspect many will be ironed out with patches in the coming weeks.
The Mako, for all it's cosmetic upgrades, is still not as fun as it should be. It's difficult to figure out what terrain you can navigate and what you can't, and I'm constantly finding myself being stuck or navigating clumsily via 25 point turns. Ultimately navigating via the vehicle is more frustration than fun.
The Ugly
The biggest step back for this game is the character creation and animation - which just makes zero sense given that the game is supposed to be such a big leap forward in terms of the underlying technology. It's just plain hard to get a character that isn't awful looking. I had to restart the game three times to get a face I could live with. One nice feature, which I wish I had taken advantage of earlier, is the ability to browse an almost limitless archive of other people's customized characters and use one of them as a starting point, or at least of a gallery of what's possible if you experiment enough with the creator. It's a welcome feature that partially offsets how simply horrible looking all of the presets are.
Then, there's the well publicized face animation issues. There's just no way around the fact that the face animations in cutscenes and conversations are really bad. There is just something really strange going on with Ryder's eyes. It's just....wrong. It varies by character preset and some are definitely worse than others. That being said the opening cutscene seems to be about as bad as it gets. It's annoying, but it's worth starting over if you have a really bad result once you see how the in game animations treat your custom Ryder. There are several people who have posted archive links and slider settings for custom Ryders that seem to render the best, so if you want to save time the community is your friend. A huge improvement would be the addition of an ability to re-tweak the characters appearance mid-game, as Dragon Age Inquisition had.
Bottom line - don't believe all the hate. I think the Mass Effect universe, narrative engagement, and combat system are so compelling, and the games themselves so important to people, that they end up being held to a different standard than other games. The flaws don't in any way outweigh the positives and nearly all of them are fixable with future patches. This is a great game and it's been a long time coming.
The story grabbed me right away. The writing was great and the voice acting was very well done. The humor hit all the right marks. This game had me laughing out loud more than a few times.
The gameplay was straight up fun. Full disclosure, I had to lower the difficulty because I am not very good at shooters. But they have a lot of difficulty levels to choose from.
The skill trees were expansive to the point that you could make your character all sorts of bad ass. And the skills were very easy to use in the heat of the moment.
They got a lot of guff about the character models, but honestly they looked just as good as fallout 4 characters. And the space environments and planets were gorgeous. The take off and landing cinematics were beautiful. You get the option to skip these but I didn't skip one. And the final fight was epic.
I loved this game. I loved the gameplay and the story. I did every mission including the side missions and I was so impressed by this game. I can't for the life of me understand the bad reviews. So undeserved. This is definitely a five out of five star game, no doubt. My only complaint is that I'm finished.
I can't recommend this game enough. Even bought a copy from my sister, and she loves it!
It was like playing an awesome Sci fi movie. Great game!
The game is not perfect. Sometimes there's too much dialog to wade through and sometimes there's frame drops and freezing (Playing on a PS4 Pro), but none of those things have ruined the experience for me.
Overall, I'm very happy with this game and look forward to playing it each night.
